Role Model

i was twenty years old backstage at a show

a mother in passing says “hey, you should know

my daughter is young now but as she grows

i’m so glad you are her role model”

at first i was pleased, like a dog with a treat

conditioned not only to want but to need

validation of my goodness, inject self-esteem

living to please as the role model

what i didn’t realize, i was young at the time

and the title felt heavy, i didn’t know why

but that was the moment i caged my own mind

to keep safe at all costs the role model

when life would get hard, i’d reach through the bars

he played with my heart like he played the guitar

i trusted too soon, now i have scars

that i cover up to be the role model

i woke up from my ego at age twenty-six

my cage was lonely with glamour and glitz

i looked through the iron, surprised, enlightened

seeing others removing their masks, unfrightened

i thought to myself will there be better timing?

do i finally let down the walls i’ve been climbing?

so now here it is, not filtered or fixed

i am not perfect, it doesn’t exist

i am tattooed in flaws

i know them by name

even when shrouded

were far from erased

and if you think it’s wrong

to walk tall in my shoes

and won’t sing along

to those parts of me too

then maybe i’m not

the role model for you
